USE: the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action

FORM: be + past participle (-ed/3er column list)

PRESENT SIMPLE: Mary writes a letter ------> A letter is written by Mary

PAST SIMPLE: Mary wrote a letter -----> A letter was written by Mary
